Guidelines for Book Reviews

Book Reviews are due in the office of the Managing Editor three months after receipt of the book from NSJ, or on the date assigned by the editors. Book Reviews may be submitted electronically in Word or WordPerfect as either (1) an e-mail attachment to ninseditor@comcast.net, or (2) on a diskette mailed to Lisa Goetz, Managing Editor, Newman Studies Journal, 211 N. Dithridge St., Pittsburgh, PA 15213. If you have any questions, please call 412-681-4375. Reviews should be double-spaced and use Times New Roman 12 point font with one-inch margins on all sides. Please use the following check-list for publication data: [ ] Title: Subtitle. (italicized) [ ] By _____. / Translated by _____. Edited by _____. (First Name, Middle Name/Initial, Last Name) [ ] Title of series. [ ] Place(s) of Publication: [ ] Publisher(s), [ ] Year of Publication. [ ] Pages: Roman + Arabic. [ ] Price for both Cloth and Paper. [ ] ISBN number following price of Cloth and Paper. Sample: An Excellent Book: Elegantly Subtitled. By José Escritor. Translated by María Dolmetscher. Deer Park, MD: St. Turibius Press, 2003. Pages: xvi + 234. Cloth, $44.98, ISBN 0-1234-5678-9; paper, $22.98, ISBN 0-1234-5679-1. Reviews should be between 500 and 1500 words and have the following components: (1) Description of contents that highlights the book's importance for Newman studies. (2) Assessment of the book that indicates: [a] intended audience (eg: academic, popular, college, etc.) [b] expertise (reliability, data, special features, etc.) [c] nature (highly technical, page turner, etc.) [d] evaluation (best on the market, don't waste money, etc.) (3) At the end of the review indicate your name and institution or location on separate lines. Some Rubrics for Reviewers: (1) While negative reviews are welcome, avoid derogatory terminology and libelous language. (2) Use gender-inclusive language and American spelling, except in direct quotations. |
